RFQ Best Practices: Getting Accurate CNC Quotes

How to write a request for quotation that returns a fast, accurate price—quantities, lead time, certifications, and the drawing package that prevents surprises.

RFQ Best Practices: Getting Accurate CNC Quotes

A good RFQ gets you a real number fast. A vague one gets a padded guess or a clarification loop. Here is the anatomy of a strong request.

Include

  • 3D model (STEP) plus a drawing with critical dims and tolerances.
  • Quantities (prototype, and per-batch if production).
  • Material and finish requirements.
  • Lead-time target and any certifications (material cert, CoC, ISO).
  • Special notes on critical or appearance features.

Be specific about volume

Prototype pricing differs from production. Give both the first quantity and the expected annual volume so the shop can optimize process and price.

Communicate certification needs

If you need a material cert or first article report, say so up front—retrofitting traceability costs more later.
