CNC lead time is rarely just ‘machine time.’ It is the sum of several steps, and the longest one sets your date.

What adds days

  • Material availability: exotic grades may need ordering.
  • Complexity: more setups and longer cycles.
  • Finishing: anodize, plating, or heat treat add external queue time.
  • Inspection: CMM and first article add measurement time.
  • Shop load: a full queue pushes your start date out.

How to shorten it

  1. Use readily available materials (6061, 304).
  2. Finish-machine critical faces after heat treat, not before.
  3. Bundle finishing with a shop that does it in-house.
  4. Give a realistic (not urgent-unrealistic) target so planning is honest.
